Simple Way to Make Herbal Tinctures


During the recent new moon, I decided to prepare chaga mushroom and wormwood tinctures, powerful healing and cleansing herbal extracts. I wanted to share with you how simple it is to make tinctures at home using any of your favorite herbs (fresh, dried, or powdered).  🌱🎨✨

Here is one simple way to do it:

Β Β Chop up fresh or dried herbs (roots and barks might be a bit more difficult to chop so just do your best and don’t worry about the size of the pieces).

Β Β If you would like, start your herbal extraction during the new or full moon to take advantage of the moon’s power.

Β Β Place your herbs into a glass jar and pour 40% vodka, rum, or brandy over the herbs so that the alcohol covers them completely.

Β Β Close the jar and shake it every day to help the healing components dissolve into the alcohol.

Β Β After 60 to 90 days or longer, squeeze out the herbal extract using cheese cloth and place the liquid in another glass jar.

Β Β Store the herbal extract in a cool and dark place.

Β Β Pour single herb extracts or created herbal formulas into glass dropper bottles for every-day use.

Lemon Balm: the Nerve Charmer


This is lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), a beautiful, versatile, calming, and vibrantly fragrant herb – no wonder bees and butterflies are so attracted to it! Lemon balm is very commonly found growing wild and has a knack for taking over a garden but I would never complain since it is an herb with magical healing properties that dreams are made of (I tend to say this about every herb πŸ’šπŸŒ±πŸ˜Š).

Lemon balm has a way of both uplifting and calming the nerves. I often pick up a leaf and rub it between my hands to smell its uplifting lemony fragrance. If I feel restless, anxious, or cannot fall asleep, I eat it in my salad or make tea from its fresh or dried leaves. If you travel often, this herb is for you!

How else can you benefit from the amazing properties of lemon balm? If you ever get an insect bite, a small cut, or a rash, you can chew up a few of its leaves and place it on the wound. This poultice will clean and soothe the wound and will help it heal faster. You can also makes a tincture or an oil infusion from fresh or dried lemon balm and use it as medicine internally and externally just as you would use the fresh herb.

How can you incorporate lemon balm into your diet? Use it in salads, pesto, lemonade, smoothies, juices, dishes in which you would normally use spinach and other greens, warm or iced tea, salad dressings, as garnish…there are so many possibilities!

Heal Your Skin Inside Out


If you are suffering from any skin condition, raw food (especially fruit) and herbs can help immensely. They will help you detox corrosive acids (toxins, metabolic waste,…) that have accumulated in your body due to a stagnant lymph system, under- or over- functioning glands, and malfunctioning channels of elimination (kidneys, bowels, lungs, skin). These effects stem from factors such as your genetics and/or toxic environment, food choices, stress, suppressed creativity and emotions, and negative thoughts. Incorporating more raw food into your diet and using herbs is an excellent start to holistic healing.

One herbal skin remedy I’ve found very effective for any skin condition is a combination of chickweed (Stellaria media), plantain (Plantago major), and violet (Viola sororia or Viola tricolor) infused in olive oil. These herbs can be harvested fresh from most back yards or can be purchased in their dry form online. I use equal parts of each herb.

When working with fresh herbs, use scissors to cut them up finely and cover them with olive oil so that there is a small amount of space between the top of the oil and herbs. Next, use a mortar and pestle to crush the herbs and to release healing compounds into the oil. Strain the oil infusion with cheese cloth and store it in a glass dropper bottle. I make small batches that can last for two weeks or more (the water content in the herbs may cause the oil to go rancid or moldy if it is stored for too long).

Another option is to buy dry, cut and sifted herbs and infuse them in olive oil for at least one month, making sure to shake the glass bottle daily. If you need this infusion immediately, while you wait for your oil to infuse, there are similar oil infusions and salves that you can purchase online (make sure that they are pure and without synthetic chemicals).

It’s a good idea to use this oil infusion in salad dressings so you can heal from inside out. You can also make tea with these three herbs and drink it often throughout the day for internal healing.
